Hello folks,

First of all I would like to say that I am really digging the service. A huge improvement from Speakeasy for me. In any result, I was with Speakeasy for five years and during the first two years they hosted a domain for me. I was able to learn their GUI and I learned how to set up CNAMEs MXs, & other DNS language by doing personal research and following tutorials. In any result, after I discontinued the hosting service with them, much of the knowledge I gained has atrophied a bit. I still understand what the coding represents, however, when applying that knowledge to for example:

create my domain e-mail addresses, I am not so sure that I am typing the proper details. When I looked at the Host servers tool, it had the following listed as the:

MX 10 mailin-01.mx.sonic.net
MX 10 mailin-02.mx.sonic.net

So I get that part.

So then I think- well the information is there for me all I have to do is cut and paste. So then I go to the Domain Email Addresses Tool: I enter my new email address as [email protected] - (heres is where Im getting confused) points to WHATDOIPLACEHERE? I tried entering one of the servers above but when I tried a test email it was getting bounced back. After spending about 3 hours on the forums and trying to find some snippet of info about this issue, I decided to ask for help by seeking the wisdom/guidance of anyone who knows a lot better than I, because I'm kinda of a newb. To be fair there were some close calls and some posts that slightly skimmed the details I needed. But alas, here I am. It seems that there are a ton of things that are happening for you guys at Sonic and the quality of service is improving daily; it also seems that many users are well versed on the ways of domain administration and hosting and can be very precise in researching particular issues. I am not one of those customers yet. I have to relearn and teach myself even more. Please provide tutorials for using the tools you provide (especially for us dummies). I don't think they need to be long, just specific to varying degree of scenarios. Im frustrated because I was able to find a ton of sales and marketing based "how to" guides. But very little to aid us folks. I'm sure I'm not the only newbie to this world, and though I have some knowledge I can only imagine how overwhelmed someone really fresh would be. So, I will end my rant here. Thank you for listening. If anyone can help...please shine a light for this lost and wandering soul.

Thank you.

Gary L. Johnson ;) :?

You need to create some mailboxes. The mailboxes themselves will be on the sonic.net domain. An example might be garyljohnson -at- sonic.net.

Then go to the domain email addresses tool, and enter the email address [email protected], and point it to garyljohnson -at- sonic.net.

Configure your mail program to read the mailbox garyljohnson -at- sonic.net, but to display the [email protected] email address.

Thank you virtualmike....

Even if I researched MX servers till my eyes bled. I really don't think I would have figured that process out.
You aree the man. :D

You're welcome, Gary.

By the way, the mailboxes aren't *required* to be located on Sonic.net's servers.

My brother has an email address in my domain (that's hosted at Sonic.net), but the address points to his Gmail box. It's the same principle... :-)

that is very interesting. It seems that there is a ton of flexibility setting it up this way. Can your brother use his own mail client to login to his email. If so,would the IMAP/SMTP servers be the same as sonic.net's or would you use an adaptation of those?

No, my brother uses the Gmail servers. Once the mail has been delivered there, it's no longer on Sonic.net's servers.
