unable to password protect a directory

Thanks for looking into it. I used pico to create and edit the files on sonic.net. I copied from the Sonic htaccess tool using Firefox for Mac OS and pasted into Terminal.app. I made sure that .htaccess had an extra line at the bottom. What else might help.

Permissions on the .htaccess and .htpasswd file?

Permissions! I didn't think about that.

Thanks. It's fixed. By the way, neither of those pages mention permissions. But it turns out that permissions were not the problem. Eventually I figured out that I had an illegal "Desired authname".
