My initial call to sonic tech support was about possible changes on the server that might have affected a wordpress plugin. On the suggestion of a sonic tech person I changed some information in the htaccess file which broke the connection to the wordpress files. I have replaced the htaccess file with several versions of what I believe to be to correct information but the site comes up reading the php code on the index.php page instead of showing the website. The site is sprintcopycenter.com

In what way is the Wordpress site broken? Cannot display the page at all? Cannot use the admin interface? Something more subtle?

I've found that a good way to start troubleshooting a suspected-incompatible plugin is to go into the wp-content/plugins directory and removing plugins one at a time till basic functionality returns. Put everything but the last one you disabled back in place (to make sure it isn't more than one plugin at fault). Now you've got things narrowed down significantly, and may be able to either find a new (compatible) version of the plugin or others that have had the same problem and come up with a workaround.

The problem is not with a plug in. After uploading a new htaccess file to the root folder where the wordpress site files reside, the site was broken - in this way: only the php code is displayed for the index.php page, etc. I should have downloaded the htaccess file or at least saved it before over-riding it but I didn't. I have done everything that wordpress support tells me to do in terms of regenerating the htaccess file and nothing works. For some reason the htaccess is not telling the site to load, only displaying the index.php code which is supposed to tell the site to load.

Perhaps this is a permissions thing. Perhaps the permalinks need to be reset in the admin panel of wordpress but since I can't access the admin dashboard either (I only get the php code for that page) I can't reset the permalinks.

I may have to re-install the site - I have the child theme folders and all of the plugins on my local machine. But I really need to avoid having to reload the content. I do have a recent database backup.

I reviewed your .htaccess file and it contained non-standard characters. I removed the odd characters, saved the file, and the site now loads. Please let us know if you require additional assistance. Thanks for choosing Sonic.net!

Wow - after three days of searching support forums and chatting with tech support! Thank you so much!!! Can you tell me what non-standard characters were used?

Anyway, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Instead of new lines the lines were squished together with ^M in between. If you look at the file the content of each line is exactly as you had programmed, minus the ^M's. I am glad it worked out correctly!

Once again, thank you very much for your help. The site loads just fine (I had to re-upload images, no big deal). However, when I try to access the wp-admin page for this site, there is a message that a database update is required. I have always updated wordpress from within the dashboard, never seen this before. Could the database have been corrupted? The site loads properly, otherwise.

In any event I have now archived the content, and I also have a recent DB sql backup file as well as all of the themes files on my local machine. Just wondered if you have any insight into this.

Thanks again.

I clicked the "Update DB" button and after a few seconds this was displayed "Your WordPress database has been successfully updated!" and the regular page is displayed at wp-login. Let me know if you need any more help!
