Lately my mail server, which is using spahous.org, gets frequent rejects from spamhous queries (RBL lookup error). My mail server is using my DNS server for lookups (not Sonic's).
These rejects happen (according to spamhous) when non-commercial users exceed limits. My server is about 1000 times below the limit (300,000 DNSBL queries per day), so this does not make sense.
Unless Sonic is doing transparent DNS proxying, intercepting DNS requests to spamhous, in which case spamhous will see all requests coming from Sonic's machine, and if more Sonic customers are doing the same (I am sure I'm not the only one, RBL is a pretty standard procedure), the number of requests will go over the limit.
If this is indeed the case, there are three solutions:
(in order of preference)
1. Stop doing transparent DNS proxying;
2. Stop doing transparent DNS proxying for RBL services (spamhous, spamcop and dozen others)
3. Pay spamhous for a commercial account.
regards,
