I own a domain (it's my name), and currently have it registered through Yahoo Small Business under a service called "Custom Mailbox," which provides the domain registration, e-mail service, and a rudimentary website. I haven't been very impressed with Yahoo, and the annual renewal is coming up; I would like to move the domain out of the Yahoo universe.

I have a Microsoft Office 365 Small Business subscription. Among other things, it provides e-mail service that can be configured to use my domain name, and a "public website with no additional hosting fees." Apparently, however, domain registration is not included, so I would need to transfer the domain from Yahoo to a third party registrar. I am therefore contemplating transferring it to Sonic. Would it be correct that the only service I would need from Sonic is the $9.95 annual registration?

One potential complication: the process Microsoft describes for setting up the domain to work with the Office 365 service involves me adding an MX record to the DNS records. (LInk) I saw a recent Office 365 forum post in which a user reported trouble in adding the required MX record to a Yahoo-registered domain. (Link) I'm therefore thinking it might be better to transfer the domain to Sonic, and at least initially order Sonic DNS service in addition to the registration; then, after Yahoo is completely out of the picture, make the required MX (or TXT) entry that will allow Microsoft to verify that I own the domain. Does this make sense? I assume that I will be able to cancel the Sonic DNS service after Microsoft makes its changes?

You're mostly spot on, except you will need to keep the Sonic DNS service. You need the MX record to stick around as long as you want to receive mail at the domain. Without the MX record, mail exchangers won't be able to determine where to send your email.

I definitely endorse moving your domain to Sonic.net. As long as it's registered at Yahoo, you never know what Yahoo will do with it. Along with the small monthly fee for DNS, I'd also recommend the small fee for domain privacy--that will stop spammers (and worse) from constantly bothering you with sales pitches (and worse).
