Fusion Speeds and Fiber

I have recently returned to Sonic.net to take advantage of Fusion after having an employer Comcast connection. I was hoping to get about 75% of the 20 Mbps speed, but have not been able to achieve anything faster than 8.4 Mbps. Based on a conversation with Support today, they said I was getting very good performance given that I was 7,000 ft from the CO. While I was surprised by the statement, I was able to learn that I really have only a theoretical limit of 10 Mbps. Given the explanation and the age of the copper wires from the CO, that could well be. While I am disappointed, at least Sonic.net is honest enough to say how it is unlike Comcast who tends to leave out important details. I was given some other things to check out and might be able to get another 1 or 2 Mbps download speeds.

The support is great just like when I had my DSL lines from Sonic.net. My big question is when can I expect to see a future with fiber so that the current speeds become a memory and I enjoy much faster performance?

Fiber availability will depend upon your location, our success in the business model including uptake of Fusion as well as interest in the fiber product, financing, and type of utility construction.

Today we are expanding coverage in Sebastopol, plus pushing ahead with a pilot in a portion of the Sunset District in San Francisco. What happens next will depend upon all of these factors.

I like the sound of this, even I don't live in Sunset. It's definitely a good start.

Any hints on which portion of the sunset district. A colleague who lives out there was recently complaining about his AT&T access. I tried to persuade him to move to sonic but I think he was sold on the increased speed of Comcast. If fiber is in his future I think I could try again!

Here are the details on the proposed Sunset pilot (attached), showing the first coverage area. Note that this is subject to change.

Since live in Sebastopol, I am interested in hearing about future plans for fiber. I have not been able to find much in the various posts as to plans and time lines.

I just realized why that map looked familiar - it quite resembles the San Francisco Eruv! http://tinyurl.com/7ah9xzv
Was this done to lower bandwidth costs on Saturdays? ;)

I hope we don't break it while we're installing the fiber on the poles! ;)

Additional construction has been underway in Sebastopol over the last couple weeks. Pic!

I live in phase 3 of the sebastopol fiber installs and I've been drooling watching the installers doing their work. I realize timelines are an ever changing thing but should we expect to see sonic trucks rolling in the coming weeks to start putting up boxes, joining the fiber runs and getting the things ready for customers?

Thanks for picking Sebastopol Dane!
