For a website on Sonic https, which version of SSL will it use? In general, will it be secure enough to take credit card payments?

I have a site at https://...vps.sonic.net. I haven't applied the certificate yet or pointed my URL to it. I'd like to know what to expect when I do.

Thanks!

Hi Rich,

If you have custom hosting then the supported encryption will be secure enough to take credit cards. If you do decide to accept credit cards on your site, be aware of the many PCI compliance requirements and take them into consideration with your implementation. Bear in mind, storing payment card data opens a whole other can of worms so I'd avoid that when possible.

For SSL/TLS security, you can expect results similar to the following out of the box and an "A" grade from Qualys' SSL Test.

Code: Select all

  TLS Fallback SCSV:
Server supports TLS Fallback SCSV

  TLS renegotiation:
Secure session renegotiation supported

  TLS Compression:
Compression disabled

  Heartbleed:
TLS 1.2 not vulnerable to heartbleed
TLS 1.1 not vulnerable to heartbleed
TLS 1.0 not vulnerable to heartbleed

  Supported Server Cipher(s):

We can disable TLS 1.0 and/or 1.1 for you if you wish. PCI scans will typically fail as a result of TLS 1.0.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Drew,

Thank you for the information. I don't have a need to store card numbers, and I'd want to offload any actual payment transactions to a third-party, like Amazon or PayPal. So, I think I could pass PCI compliance requirements, but I want to make sure that it would be difficult for someone to hack the pages and fraudulently request payments. I'll probably request TLS 1.0 be turned off.

Thanks,
Rich
