I am using the BackUpWordPress plugin on a Sonic site, and I am receiving the following error message:

Mysqldump: ERROR 1251: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

I have a similar setup on another Sonic site, with no such problem.

Any ideas or recommendations? Appreciate the help!

You might be defaulting to an older version of PHP - make sure you're using at least 5.3 as outlined on the Wiki:

Please feel free to send further information (site, directory) to me via a private message if it still isn't working right.

Hi Joe:

To the best of my knowledge, we have PHP 5.3.29 and MSQL 5.5.47

The BackUpWordpress plugin is not my favorite, but it does backup on a set schedule but for the error message. I prefer to use UpdraftPlus, but there are usually Cron issues and scheduled backups have been a problem.

Thanks, Ned

Hi Ned,

You're correct on the versions but as it turns out, all PHP versions are linked against older MySQL client libraries (version 5.0.67) which is why you are getting that error. This essentially means PHP only knows how to speak to MySQL 5.0 servers and isn't aware of features & functionality offered by newer versions such as the newer hashed passwords (you can still of course issue queries that use newer features). Since it is referencing the "mysqldump" program, the same applies for that.

I checked and shell.sonic.net is also running MySQL client 5.0 so you might have some trouble trying manually from there too.

We're looking into getting MySQL libraries updated for PHP so stay tuned and thank you for the feedback.

You may want to look at https://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/ - I use it on several sites. It will back up database only, or database and files, and you specify the directories and folders you want backed up. You can set a schedule (I typically run weekly database and monthly full site backups), and send the backup files to DropBox, S3, Rackspace, email, FTP - it's a pretty robust backup plugin with a free and a premium version.

Hi Guest:

Thanks for the recommendation -- I have installed this on both of my Sonic sites, backed up each, and we'll see how it operates on a schedule...

Thanks, Ned

It looks like in your wordpress/wp-content/uploads/backwpup-cXXXXX-backups directory are a number of backups from previous days, some failed that are each about 2 GB and in total are taking up 20 GB of disk space, which is causing you to exceed your disk quota.

Try deleting some of these older backups. Since each backup is around 2 GB, if this plugin has any backup retention options, you may need to tell it to keep less backups.

Thanks Drew -- I dumped a bunch of old backups and am trying again.
