Sonic.net Free Web Hosting

Just a note to remind everyone that Sonic.net offers two levels of web hosting at no charge with all of our broadband access products:

"Mini" Hosting, where the URL is of the style "http://username.users.sonic.net/" for example. Every customer can enable a mini hosting directory, with optional Wordpress one-click installed if you like.

Personal Web Hosting, which offers a domain name and hosting for that domain. This provides you a URL of the style "http://www.example.com". The domain name is free for the first year, then our standard domain registration rates apply. The hosting itself is free with your broadband account here.

Personal Web Hosting is a great setup for a small business or hobby site, or a family blog, where you want a new domain. (For an existing domain - sorry - you'll need to opt for our larger Basic or Standard hosting offerings.)

For the FAQ and details, see: http://sonic.net/support/faq/web/personal_hosting.shtml

To get started with either Mini or Personal Web Hosting, visit: https://members.sonic.net/websites/pers ... b_hosting/

During setup, you will be offered the Wordpress one-click installation option.

How do we get the personal web hosting setup? When I went through my account it says it cost 9.95 a year.

You can activate Personal Hosting through our member tools at https://members.sonic.net/websites/pers ... b_hosting/

This will have you register a new domain (we pick up the tab on the first year of registration), and off you go. Renewing the registration is typically $9.95 per year, but you are free to move your registration elsewhere and continue hosting the website with us at no charge from us so long as you have internet access service.

This is great for people who are thinking about doing a website.
You can do it free until it builds up enough traffic to prove that it deserves a site of its own.

And if you use a domain name, then if you do move later it will be transparent to any users you already have. They wont even know that your entire website has moved to a new location

Dane: why that restriction on bringing an existing domain to sonic.net? That seems like a form of lock-in that sonic normally does not go for. Should I not freely be able to move in, out, back, depending on need and price?

Also from https://members.sonic.net/websites/hosting/add/ it is not at all apparent there is a "free" option... instead you have to go to https://members.sonic.net/websites/pers ... b_hosting/

I see the free hosting when I log in but only when you click on personal hosting. It is probably done so people really realize this offer is for personal hosting only not for people who host any kind of business. I feel that limiting it to buying a domain from sonic is ok otherwise it might get complicated and sonic is not in the hosting business. Still a great deal because a domain itself always cost around $12 plus tax so sonic's $14.99 (or was it $14.95) is very much in line and still a great deal for hosting and domain.

Dane, the local hang gliding club (Sonomawings.com) is hosted on the rapidly sinking Tapatalk/AOL platform.
I know several of us are Sonic customers.

Is there a way to move an existing website over to Sonic hosting?

Hi, Dane! I have a personal web site hosted on Sonic (http://tmpeterson.net) and I'm using WordPress to create content. I'd like to add SSL to it so that it becomes https://tmpeterson.net. Can you explain how to do that or direct me to some education, please?
