Looks there's a problem with the ntp server on time.sonic.net:

Code: Select all

ntpdate -q time.sonic.net
server 64.142.1.20, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000
11 Jan 15:10:51 ntpdate[851]: no server suitable for synchronization found

OK, never mind -- it's back up now.

We, like just about every other ntp service on the planet, were vulnerable to the ntp bandwidth amplification attacks and had to take the server offline until we were able to upgrade ntpd and resolve the problem.

Is there a problem with time.sonic.net?

Code: Select all

ntpdate -q time.sonic.net
server 64.142.1.20, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000

I turned it off last night after learning about the remote exploit. Upgrading turned out to be problematic so I ended up changing the DNS record to point to another GPS time server appliance that is collocated in Santa Rosa. People may need to restart ntp in order for it to learn the new IP address.

Looks like the DNS for time.sonic.net has reverted to its prior address and the ntpd server running on that host is at stratum 16 and not suitable for synchronization:

Code: Select all

# ntpdate -q time.sonic.net
server 64.142.1.20, stratum 16, offset -0.000045, delay 0.05042

Most likely you just caught it when it was starting back up. We replaced the hardware as part of an OS upgrade (which was needed anyway) in order to get the latest version of ntp installed. Since then I've been having some trouble getting the GPS time source dialed back in and stable but it is up and running okay - just with a lot more jitter in the GPS/PPS signal than it should have. The new motherboards onboard uarts may be not-so-much so we might try swapping out to a real 16550A pci expansion card.

Code: Select all

$ ntpq -p
     remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
