I'm not clear on the difference. Also, is there a setting in Sonic to confirm an email one has sent was opened?

A return receipt will send a notification back to you (if approved by the recipient) saying that your email was opened while a delivery status notification will only confirm that an email was successfully sent to the recipient. When composing an email in Webmail, right below the subject line, there are 2 boxes labelled "Return receipt" and "Delivery status notification" that when checked will enable them. If you do not see these options when composing a new email, try clicking the down caret (v) located next to "from" on the top line of the email.

Delivery Status Notification is a service of SMTP. In case of failure, a failure notification is sent by default. in case of success it is sent if requested. It is specified in RFC 3461-4 and 6522. So it's an indication that the message was delivered to the mail box. not that was read.

Message Disposition Notification indicates if the message was actually read ior deleted before reading. You can read RFC 3798 about this.
However this read receipt is often done with a Return-Receipt-To email header: the mail client wouldld ask for confirmation that you want to send a read receipt. The recipient can ignore the request.
