I have a device that I need to access remotely through the WAN. It is a communications device through which I can control our home solar power system. It is older, only HTTP interface. I don't want my password to be compromised..
It has been suggested that the easiest way to minimally secure it is to get a VPN router for the LAN where that system is located. I was told that configuring the existing router to accept only certain device requests would be quite complicated.

Any suggestions? Thanks... .

You can configure a port on your router to forward to the port 80 (http) on that device.
Note that some people use port scanners searching for open ports to compromise so it's not really safe.

Setting up a vpn is possible if your router supports it. Or you can run a vpn server (like open VPN) on one of your computers.
It can be involving. You will also need to setup the vpn client on the machines you want to use to connect to your device.

A solution you could try is to use the google remotedesktop service: https://remotedesktop.google.com/
Once set up, you will need to have a computer running at your home.
From elsewhere, you can open a remote desktop on your computer and open a web browser there (inside your network) and see your device.

I appreciate your ideas... I will probably wait until I have some more time on my hands before delving into the subject.

Thank you
