This quote from another post
You ended Legacy DSL Service on June 15, 2022

has me wondering yet again what is the future of my DSL? I am not ready to pay $20.month more for fiber which provides all sorts of stuff I don't need (but which I do understand is very good for a lot of other households), and removes something I do need (a landline that works when the power is out).

I understand that change is inevitable, but I'm going to hold onto what is working for me now until I can't.
So, again, is my copper DSL in danger of being deleted?

Once Fiber becomes available at your address you will not pay $20 more per month for fiber. You would pay $20 more per month to maintain your DSL service as is once Fiber is available. The price for Fusion Fiber has the same monthly rate as DSL.

If your main concern is maintaining a traditional copper landline and you do not wish to upgrade to Fiber, then you will incur a Legacy fee when that time comes of an additional $20 per month.

We currently have no plans to turn down regular DSL services. But in areas where Fiber is available and soon to be available, we are urging customers to migrate to Fiber once they can do so. We will not delete your Copper DSL, but you will incur a Legacy Fee if you choose not to migrate to Fiber.

Hmm, so what you are saying is that:

When Sonic has installed fiber in my neighborhood, I will have the choice of paying $20 more or $20 more?

(Actually it looks like it's maybe still cheaper for the Legacy DSL: $39.99 for DSL + the $20 Legacy fee vs $69.99 for IPBB.

And I think that in order to have a telephone that works in a power outage there would be other costs to have battery backup, right?)

I find this all very disheartening.

No, not ATT fiber, this only applies where Sonic has built fiber. Sonic fiber pricing is the same as your DSL pricing, so there is no cost increase.

But we cannot financially sustain renting copper lines in addition to building fiber which goes unused if a customer will not switch. So only for customers who will not switch to our own fiber and require us to also rent the old copper lines, we pass on that cost as a surcharge.

Aha. That makes more sense. Thank you, Dane.

Okay, I think I finally understand. I am sorry if I have been a bit slow. Here's how I now see it:

AT&T has run fiber in my area, and I could if I wanted to get it at a cost of $69.xx.
When Sonic runs its own fiber in my area I can get it for $39.99, and at that point if I'm still too stubborn to change (grin), I would then pay a fee for keeping the DSL service.

I may be slow, but I also think that maybe communication about all of this has been lacking? Or maybe I have just not known where to look. In any case, this revised scenario looks fine to me -- if I have it right.
