Hey guys,

Just signed up for Sonic.net but I am in a place with only a 12 month lease; is it possible to get a 12-month contract or no contract offering with DirecTV?

No, I'm afraid not. I believe DirecTV does this because they've got a lot of up-front costs in installation, equipment, etc, so they want to assure they have an adequate duration to cover their costs.

But, you can move an in-contract service from one premise to another. So, maybe that's an option, as long as you don't move to a premise where a satellite dish is not permissible.

Didn't realize that was possible. Thanks Dane. We're absolutely loving Sonic.net since signing up this past week!

It's worth noting that if DirecTV come out to do your (free) movers install and determine that you can't get service, they typically will let you out of your contract. I don't know if they are required to do this, but it's worth keeping in mind.
