accessing voicemail remotely

I can not access my voicemail remotely on my Iphone. When I follow instructions, such as press '*', or dial the number, it hangs up on me. It was ported from Uverse, so not sure if that's why this is problematic. I can access the voicemail over the web.

When you press any button following the instructions given it immediately hangs up? Does it only occur from your iphone or does it also happen when you check from your home phone or another phone?
