If you have multiple phone lines at your location and would like to differentiate between them quickly while doing wire work, this can be useful, and it isn't just our staff members that may have cause to do wire work on a given line. Maybe you're doing some remodeling and want to make sure the right lines are going to the right place.

You personally may not find a need to use it, but if there were problems with the phone line, a technician could use the tone to do some basic troubleshooting.

For more information, use The Google with "1004 hertz tone." 8-)

Note that today, most line techs have more sophisticated equipment and don't use the 1004 Hz tone.

The 1004 Hz tone is also sent at a specific signal level (0 dBm) to allow measuring line loss. See:

I figured this was a cool feature that could be used to annoy junk callers. That is what I plan to do with it when I get my service connected.
