can I use my laptop as a landline phone?

I have a converter which allows me to plug the phone line from the AT&T router into my MacBook usb-c. that is as far as I have gotten.

I don't know about the att fiber offered by sonic. I know that when you have sonic fiber you can use your mobile phone to make calls by installing their app (making and receiving calls) and you can do the same with the mac since the app is also available for the mac.

You are trying to place/receive calls from your computer?
Typically a landline is with an RG11 in which you plug a corded or cordless phone.
Sonic has an app for cell phone that is a voip client which lets you place/receive calls on the number they have assigned to you from your cell phone.
