shell server?

I am new to Sonic.
I see references to shell access in this forum (including a pointer to https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Shell_Acces ... Transition). I assume this is ssh access to a UNIX system.
Can anyone point me to any information beyond this page?
For instance:
* do I log in with my Sonic user & password, or is there an additional registration process?
* what types of usage are allowed or not allowed?
* There are references to using mail clients - is that accessing the Sonic email account that I can set up through the mainstream Sonic pages, or different email accounts?
* What type of system is this?
(I guess I could find out once I log in, but I'm a little wary about entering my user & password at a login prompt for a system that I'm a bit fuzzy about - ref my 1st question).
