Of note, Dane says if you are on Sonic FTTN service, AT&T by commercial agreement with Sonic, does not collect your data:

In other words, you may not need to use the VPN when at home and using your Sonic FTTN.

I suppose that might be true if you trust everyone at AT&T to be aware of and strictly adhere to that agreement, and you believe that AT&T is the only entity with access to AT&T's network.

Yeah, it pays to be overly careful. Att could still be collecting data without our or Sonic's knowledge.
