What happened to email-only service? Why so expensive? ($18.95/month)

When I moved in July, I asked Sonic to transition my account from Fusion x2 to email-only, and was told I would be charged a nominal amount of, as I recall it, $6/month. Instead they are charging me $18.95/month for something called "Basic Internet Service", which is not what I was told nor would have agreed to at that price level - it's a hassle to change my email address in various places, but it's not $228/year of hassle.

As recently as May 2015 during another transition, I was being charged $4/month for email-only service. So, has there been a 373% increase in price for email-only service in 3 years, or did support simply put me on the wrong plan? What are others paying for email-only service?

Apologies for the trouble! That doesn't sound right, and it looks like that Basic Internet Service charge shouldn't be there if you're just looking for email only. I see the ticket you sent in and I'll send you a response there to get this resolved.

Derek,

Perhaps you can help me too.

Why has Sonic chosen to bill your customers a ridiculous amount of overage charges as opposed to offering different tiers for mail storage for those of us that need more? For going on close to a year now, i have been charged 5 to 10 times what I pay for the email account. I normally pay $20+ per month for the email account with 5GB storage. Last few months bills were $191 for being 3-4GB over!!! That amounts to $191/month for 4 email accounts using 9GB of storage...is that reasonable? I don't get why i can't just pay $20/month for an additional email account and get an additional 5GB of storage with it. I have been a customer for nearly 20 years, and was probably one of the first to have Sonic broadband service in the East bay area in the early 2000's. I am very disappointed that I have to resort to using a gmail account with some horrific username, in order to pull my old email i need to save off your servers, just so I get can get under the 5GB limit.

And I guess based on what the original poster mentioned, should i be paying $20/month instead of $6/month?

Your help greatly appreciated.

Our email service was not designed with that kind of storage in mind (5GB of email is a ton - I'd guess somewhere around 20,000 emails). There are both physical limitations (our mail spools were designed for typical use and are not meant for holding such high volumes of data) as well as practical limitations (backups become increasingly difficult to perform on a regular basis if the mail spool is so large).

If cleaning out your email box isn't a possible solution, I would recommend installing an email client on your computer and setting up a POP account. This will allow you to download your emails off of our server and onto your computer, where you can keep a copy and manage backups at your convenience.
