Can someone point me to a map, or equivalent resource, that would reveal the boundaries of the areas folks are using to discuss the fiber deployment?

Thank you in advance!

Dane posted a partial map of Berkeley here, back in March, showing FDA (fiber distribution area) boundaries, though it doesn’t identify them.

To identify my own FDA, I’ve relied on the Sonic notices posted on utility poles designated to hold LCP (local convergence point) cabinets. A pole in my neighborhood has a notice referring to “Sonic Project Number: 1607-FDA 27C-2847,” which tells me that the cabinet mounted on that pole will support FDA 27C. I see from the map that the pole is in the same FDA as my residence, so I conclude that my residence is in FDA 27C.

If Sonic has installed fiber on your street, you can follow it back to your LCP. Even if the cabinet hasn’t yet been mounted, you can recognize the LCP by the roll (or rolls) of fiber cable hanging from the pole. If you’re lucky, the notice will still be on the pole and that will tell you your FDA.

If this all seems somewhat roundabout, it is. If anyone knows of a publicly accessible map showing Berkeley FDA numbers, I’d love to know about it.

Are there any updates on the 900 Creston Rd area (Marin Ave all the way up the hill) by any chance? Thank you!

Thanks for that, Chris!

I wonder what's going on here along 1600 Addison? I don't see Sonic lines on our poles, and on the map I see we're in between solid green areas north of University Ave and east of Shattuck.

I've written to mayor/council urging permitting be expedited. Our target date was 8 months ago, signed up 1.5 years ago.

Been seeing trucks almost every week around my area (west berkeley), so at the very least you know work is happening somewhere - it could be as simple as crews need time to put the fiber up (since the Berkeley permitting breakthrough about 1 month ago)

I'm curious about the permitting breakthrough. (My attention was elsewhere, and I don't see anything about it a month upthread.)

The permit news came on page 40 of this thread around April 11th (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6760&start=390).

I had a look on Saturday, when the dog and I went for a walk. The Sonic cable was in place (along with the usual AT&T and Comcast cables). It looked kind of untidy, so it may have gone in just recently and not yet had a second pass from the crew to tidy things up.

We followed it down Addison to the LCP at Addison and Spaulding. Multiple cables converged there and a splitter cabinet was mounted on the pole, but the cables aren’t yet tied into the cabinet (typical state of affairs around the neighborhood at this point). The notice on the pole indicates that it’s the LCP for FDA 27A (answering a question posed by lefish back in April).

So, to answer to your question, what’s going on along the 1600 block of Addison is pretty much the same as what’s going on throughout the neighborhood. We’re not there yet, but we’re making progress.

By the way, if you’re located on the south side of that block of Addison (University Terrace faculty housing), your situation might be a little different, because the complex has underground service. Depending on how the conduits and distribution system were set up, installing Sonic fiber might present additional challenges.

OMG Chris, this was so very kind of you! It's so fun to know I'm in 27A!

It has been a month or two since I walked the block with binoculars looking for a Sonic cable...and I did see a one of the small Sonic vans across the street a couple weeks ago (a moment of great but fleeting joy).

Thankfully I live across the street from University Terrace, so I dodged the bullet of additional challenges.

No problem. I’m in the neighborhood anyway, and dogs need their walks.
