Hi Dane, any update on fixing the unsafe pole at Mabel and Carrison St in South Berkeley? I get that it's on PG&E and that Sonic can't go in until that happens, but it's incredibly frustrating to be waiting with no update for months at a time and no obvious way of influencing PG&E to get it done.

I pre-ordered during the summer of 2018 and I'm still waiting to give you my money and cut off AT&T.

If you haven't already, you really should consider establishing a member activist program to build the pressure on city and utility officials and unstick these types of delays. This thread has 480+ posts for Berkeley alone. All of those posters could have been given a number to text that would, for example, automatically connect them on a call to their councilperson or whomever else was slowing things down.

At the very least, an easily sharable petition targeted at specific decision-makers would give frustrated future members like myself a way to do something - plus you'd be organically growing your list of potential customers through viral shares. Your overall base of supporters (members + non-member action takers) could then be mobilized at key times to support net neutrality. Think of it as a virtuous cycle of customer acquisition and Save the Net movement-building.

Hi,
We had Sonic since 2012. It’s always been slow, but since AT&T and others wouldn’t even provide service to our Berkeley address, Sonic has been our only option.
We were notified in 2018 that the upgrade was coming. The last notice said that the upgrade was 98% rolled out.
We still have not received it. ☹️
I’ve written to customer service and heard that Sonic is “working with the city to get things going.” I’m not sure what that means.
We’re near Cedar and Euclid. Is the issue with all of Berkeley or just with our local neighborhood?
Thanks.

zoe_scheffy: are you on Euclid north of Cedar? If you are your utilities are probably all underground right? Sonic currently does not offer fiber in areas with underground service.

We have telephone poles and lots of wires above us. So I think our utilities are above ground. I’ve saw Sonic trucks on our street last summer.
I do get emails suggesting my house is going to get the upgrade, and my account says so online.
Sigh.

Last month update email "over 30% of the network in your area is live!"
This month update email "over 37% of the network in your area is activated"

With this rate of activation, I'm out. Sorry, I can't wait any longer. I'll sign up with the other company for now...may be I'll come back to Sonic in a year and hopefully I'll get an email saying "over 90% of the network in your area is activated"

Disappointed!!!!

As another data point, actual fiber optic cable was strung along my street (from a steel support cable) this week, in West Berkeley. So work is happening. Sonic still hasn't emailed me about activation though!

@jacob.karinen Thanks for your prompt reply. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I don't know how to send a direct message to you. Maybe someone knows how to create an account on the forums without a sonic account?

My address is 2321 Russell St. It's an apartment building, which is a separate challenge besides the utility pole.

I created this map based on the information I've been able to gather:

On the 1800 block of Alcatraz. I see you all doing installs about four blocks up from where i am. Any idea when we might see the upgrade? In an apartment complex if that makes a difference.

Hi Dane, for a while you were posting some semi-regular updates on FDA's going live in Berkeley, and I think that was greatly appreciated here. Are FDA's still continuing to go live or have there been new issues that arose?

- Hopefully, from FDA32C

Yup, we are continuing to activate network in that region. I have been traveling, and haven't had time to post any updates.

Many were stuck behind the placement and splicing of a backbone cable that was stuck on permitting, so it will take us some time to complete everything in the area.

Thank you for your patience!
