Smart\RG with red power light, now using TP-Link C8 router

Sonic installed fiber over the weekend and provided a Smart\RG router. The install went well.

Yesterday, the Smart\RG was not working to provide DHCP services and wireless. I noticed the power light is red.

I plugged in a TP-Link Archer C8 wireless router I was using before, set it to dynamic IP and it connected seamlessly to the ONT. This now seems to be running as well as the Smart\RG.

I sent a ticket in already.

I was going to keep the Smart\RG to troubleshoot issues for the first month, but now I'm thinking of just sending it back.

Any reason to troubleshoot the RG and have Sonic replace?

We would definitely like to look into replacing your RG, if needed, or troubleshoot to figure out why it isn't working. By using our provided equipment, this includes you in our wire plan (https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Sonic_Wire_Plan).

If a technician visit is ever necessary, due to a problem with any of the physical infrastructure, that would be at no charge to you. We are sure to keep firmware, on our equipment, up to date. Also, by using our equipment, we are able to offer a higher level of support whenever you call in.

Thanks for the reply. I will replace it because I wanted to do some troubleshooting in case this was necessary for the first months of service. Email tech was responsive.

The fiber demark that was installed is 1 foot from the ONT inside the crawlspace of my house, which is essentially inside my house. And the ONT is plugged into the wiring of the house that I installed, so wire plan doesn't cover much of interest to me. And I don't have a discount.

I have relatives and friends I have introduced to Sonic. They are happy with their Sonic RG and I don't have to deal with their occasional issues, which are handled quite well by telephone tech. So all is good.

Interesting, the wire plan is a business model that hearkens back to the old telephone company days and is the de facto plan embedded in cable subscriptions where you have no choice.

I think Sonic is savvy to offer a choice for clients.
