Fiber optic

I read about Sonic installing fiber-optic cables in Sebastopol in Sunday's PD.
I live in an area where the phone system will not support DSL, and there is no cable service (on the hill just east of Rohnert Park). The housing is low density, but I believe nearly everyone up here would subscribe to such a service. Our only internet access currently is through CDS/PogoWave, satellite, or cell phone. Would such an area be a good candidate for fiber-optic service?
