Coffey Park Rebuilding

Hello,

I'm one of the block captains in the Coffey Park rebuild effort.
Today we learned that PG&E will be replacing all 40000 feet of conduit in Coffey Park.
This may be a great opportunity to get fiber installed in the neighborhood.

It certainly would, and this is something we've been advocating for with the City of Santa Rosa. I'd encourage you to check in with them on whether they've got a dig once condition on the permit issuance that'd get new conduit in place for fiber. So far, I haven't heard that they've decided to do this, in SR or in the County.

Hello Dane,

Thanks for the reply. I'll reach out to the city tomorrow and see what I can find out regarding the dig plans.
This line of text is what triggered me to reach out to Sonic
"PGE just announced they'll be replacing all 40,000 ft of conduit in Coffey Park. They plan to start joint trenching in April and predict it should take two months. "
I'll reply back on Thursday with any information that I can find.

Best Regards,
Doug Lash

Hello,

I've reached out to Gabe Osburn at the Santa Rosa Planning & Economic Development Department(PED).
Gabe is the Deputy Director of the Planning & Economic Development office of Santa Rosa and from what I have read is in charge of the trench operations.
I've sent him an email at GOsburn@srcity.org and am waiting to hear back.
I will post additional info when after I speak with Gabe.

Best Regards,
Doug Lash

Hello,

I have a response from Gabe Osburn:

We actually had a meeting with all the dry utility companies (Sonic included) a while back to discuss the replacement of power and communications cabling, as well as future conduit needs. PG&E will be installing a new joint trench to replace the electrical. As part of that process, PG&E provides other providers with the opportunity to add conduits to the trench. Adding conduits to the trench typically involves a financial participation in the project. I believe PG&E is going to expect that other providers cover a proportionate financial share of the design of the trench, as well as the construction. That will likely also be the case for any additional conduits requested by the City.

I’m currently attempting to schedule a follow up meeting with all the dry utility companies next Thursday. I’ve been sending out invites yesterday and today. I will reach out to Sonic tonight. We should know more on this subject towards the end of next week. Hopefully Sonic will be able to attend the meeting.

This sounds hopeful!

Best Regards,
Doug Lash

PG&E's cost for the trench is going to be very high. As a result, we won't join because we were not in it prior to the fire, so the cost wouldn't be covered by insurance.

We believe that the City can condition their permitting on inclusion conduit for the benefit of the City itself. This is the dig once model that Brentwood implemented, so there are good prior examples. And the actual cost to add a conduit to an existing trench is negligible. Then once built, the municipality would go through a selection process to choose a carrier who could put fiber into that conduit. Or the City could do so itself, run an open network, who knows - lots of options. But they'd be in charge of their own infrastructure at that point, and could set policies (net neutrality, etc) and such if they wanted to.

I'm unclear if Santa Rosa or Sonoma County will take this step as part of the utility infrastructure reconstruction.
