Hi All,

I thought I'd share the latest on this, and and would like other people to post their experiences with their hardware.
I tested 4 models so far:

1. ZTE ZXV10 W300 (provided by Sonic).
Nice little box, but SNMP support is limited to interface counters. No OIDs related to the aDSL line that I could find, especially not under ADSL-LINE-MIB. I keep it as my backup.

2. Netgear N300
Works, but no SNMP support whatsoever.
Someone wants one? Cheap !

3. Cisco 2811 with HWIC-1ADSL.
Pricey, not easy to configure, no WiFi. Full SNMP support.
This is now my primary router / modem.

Not tested: Cisco 1841

$20 plus shipping, email me michel@arneill-py.sacramento.ca.us

For those who wonder why I want SNMP: look here:

Scroll down a bit to DSL line analysis

At about 13:45 yesterday, first drop in download speed (1st graph), along with upstream SNR increase (3rd graph).

At about from 16:30 to 17:30, donwlink SNR dying slowly (2nd graph), triggering yet another modem training at 17:30 with another drop in speed.

Between 1:00 and 1:30 (AM) today, increase in donwling SNR. Go figure.

At 10:15 I forced a re-sync to get my download speed back.

That's really cool!

I'm a new Sonic customer, too far away for Fusion service, so still using the older regular DSL over AT&T shared lines.

I got the ZTE 831 II modem from Sonic.

This doesn't have SNMP, to my knowledge, but there's a wealth of information that's available if you telnet into the modem and type commands at it!

Here's an example of what can be learned (this is for a different brand of modem, not ZTE, but the theory is similar): http://huaweihg612hacking.wordpress.com ... he-huawei/

It would be really cool to find a way to graph the similar things from the ZTE modem.

I used to use SNMP, but the problem with many DSL modems is that they have all the numbers internally available but don't make it easy for them to be seen by the user. You have to log in and give commands manually, each time. It would be ideal to make a script or something, to automatically log in and then serve the results up via SNMP, but that's a long project for another time.

Here's some commands, as seen from the help screen:

adsl info --state
adsl info --show
adsl info --stats
adsl info --SNR
adsl info --QLN
adsl info --Hlog
adsl info --Hlin
adsl info --HlinS
adsl info --Bits
adsl info --linediag

Has anybody else experimented with these commands? In particular, the --SNR and --Bits seem to be the most useful.

I gave up trying to re-invent the wheel. If you write a script, you'll have to toss it is you get a new modem, not worth the work. I'm sticking to SNMP. I bought a Cisco 1841 on Ebay yesterday for 190 bucks, that's the way to go.
