I am not a current customer yet, but am interested in a similar setup.

What connection does Sonic Fiber terminate into your hosue with? Ethernet?
If I understand correctly, you are not using the included Pace modem/router and straight from Sonic > Edgerouter?

My current setup is ISP > (personal) cable modem > ethernet > pfSense Router

They terminate their fiber onto an Adtran 411 device, which provides a single gig-Ethernet port with DHCP. You can connect that to your pfsense box should you want.

I'm due for Fibre install next month, and wish to avoid the $10/mo fee for "RG Rental", but...

(This sounds reasonable since I've always bought my own cable modem instead of renting the ancient one my cable ISP gave me.)

What *is* an RG? Once I know I do I just call Sonic and ask what RG's they approve? What's the best RG to get, please?

(I guess "Adran 411" the RG Sonic is providing/renting?)

Or is the consensus of customers that renting to give "support full telemetry" important enough to rent?

The RG is a residential gateway. Basically a wireless router with extra functionality so they can monitor your connection status to provide some support and troubleshooting. It's also rated for full Gbps speed.

The adtran converts the fiber to a RJ45. It comes free with your fiber.

So you can actually use your current router to save $10, but you'd lose support, telemetry, and that service insurance. Also no guarantee that your current router is fast enough to support Gb speeds.

Can you provide a specific model and number of the Residential Gateway, so I can research and compare it to my own router (Asus RT-AC68U)? I should be getting Gigabit Fiber this month, and I want to make sure which router provides the best speed and coverage for my home. Also, if I use Sonic's RG, can I go into the gateway settings and change the wifi password? I like to change it every year, for security.

Hi Clu42,

The last 2 on this page are the ones that Sonic provides for Fusion Fiber customers: https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Residential_Gateway

Yes, you can change the wifi password.

I think what I'll do is accept install of an RG, then I'll have a baseline of stability and speed against which to compare using my own router instead. Worth a $10 monthly charge or two.

Cool.

IIRC a phone line comes with a Sonic install. (Which I have zero interest in.)

Are these RG devices also providing the phone output jack?

The Adtran 411 supplies the rj45 and rj11 port, which comes free with your install. The RG gives you wifi and additional RJ45 ports, similar to any other router (but without the customized fw giving Sonic telemtry).

Thank you very much larns576!

(And I love that now I know what the heck an rj11 is!)

IPv6 dual stack is coming soon, so v6 firewall is important. The Sonic supplied gear has wire speed v4 and v6, FYI.
