He explained that while Sonic runs its own fiber in some places, in Albany, at least, it's purchasing the bandwidth from AT&T and is going to be totally dependent on AT&T for installs and maintenance."

What's the real story? Are there two fiber lines going on the poles in Albany, or just one. Is it a joint venture, or a resale situation? If a drop drops, who can fix it? Is Sonic starting from the Solano Avenue Central Office and working outward, or starting by running feeds to the hinterlands where DSL sucks, first? @Dane ? Sonic Support?

Sounds like he's talking about Sonic fusion, and not sonic fiber.

Yep, he’s misinformed. We run our own fiber for our Gigabit service.

Is AT&T running fiber in Albany also? Is Sonic competing with AT&T for access to overloaded poles?

Yes, AT&T also appears to be building fiber too in many locations. And because they are adding fiber to an existing strand, they don't appear to regard overloading as a concern. It's not exactly a level playing field out in the real world.

Of course, if you can get Sonic fiber, please do - it's symmetric, fast, neutral and a great value. And customer service is top notch. Do sign on!

Ok, NextDoor has the right info, including a copy of your post. The local chatter is mostly about advantages of using LMI to order the fiber (according to the chatter there are differences in how the "rental" situation is handled).
