FTTN X2 modem rental

So for FTTN X2, is there actually equipment that can be bought to avoid paying the monthly rental fee?

Equipment rental is mandatory on our FTTN services, there isn't an option to purchase the equipment or use third party equipment.

Note: Fusion X2 (the double DSL service) is possible with customer equipment.
