This may be quite a hot coal but I am looking for an alternative ISP to ATT and Comcast following their tremendous support of Ajit Pai and his anti-consumer role in the FCC. Having just learned of Sonic, would Sonic be a true alternative or would I basically still be feeding the Large ISPs? Basically, I want to vote with my wallet and I want to know if Sonic is a legitimate choice.

If you can get Sonic fiber, you're almost free of supporting the big telecoms.
If you get Sonic's DSL service, some of your money goes to the big guys, but you retain all your freedom.

Here's an interesting non-NN FCC action that sounds like it could result in AT&T pulling its reseller agreements with Sonic and/or simply shutting down copper anywhere they're running fiber:
