During your fiber installation, you can purchase from us a lithium based battery backup unit that’s got a battery which is good for ten years and which will deliver 8+ hours of runtime for both Ethernet and POTS.

> 8+ hours

That's plenty for the ordinary power glitch.

Is the battery replaceable, so I can swap cells during the post-earthquake weeks with a solar-battery-charging setup?
Or is there an external power jack on the device?
Or if I hook up a power-over-Ethernet supply to the home network, will that power reach the Sonic fiber hardware?

Looking for ways to supply DC power after the 8-hour time expires, presuming Sonic will survive the big earthquake.

I know I'm asking a lot here. But as the ham radio operator on my block, I'm going to be pushing to keep connections up in all available ways. It's going to be a zoo at best.

Sonic folks might want to look at these plans, they're public info:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/becertainn
"Dedicated to connecting Berkeley CERT Teams (neighborhood groups) to improve our collective disaster response capacity and effectiveness"

There's also a mesh network set up by some of the same folks as a last fallback for communications.

Berkeley fire stations all have 2-meter radio antennas so the local hams can come with radios and plug in and help with communications -- I'd guess my nearby fire station is also within the upcoming Sonic fiber area, since they're probably closer to the phone company building on Solano than we are. I'll ask around.

Why worry? Well, according to the fireman who came to our last neighborhood meeting, when the East Bay next has a severe fire it's "going to burn all the way to the Bay" -- optimism is a bit scarce in the worst-case scenarios.

We're going to be patching together every link we can keep working, I hope including Sonic's network.

I'm pretty sure the battery is replaceable when it will no longer charge, and the UPS is external to the ONT, plugging into its external power jack.

What is the model number of this backup device?

For the OP I feel if the has that much infrastructure, esp as a ham radio operator, a better backup solution is a backup generator. People are relying on you in the event of a disaster, don't mess with batteries. Get something that could be refilled easily, and during the evenings.

Many thanks for the info on the 12V backup power hardware device from PSI/Powertec that will be bundled.
Apparently they only supply these to businesses? Nice to know that's going to be available from Sonic.
I emailed Powertec to ask about availability of extra battery packs/backup charging of their batteries.

On the advice to buy a generator, thought of that, talked it over with neighbors, and these issues arise (at least)

1) can't store gasoline, which degrades over time -- has to be a diesel generator as diesel fuel can be stored longterm
2) haven't found one that has clean power output rated safe for semiconductor power systems (pointer welcome) nor one that outputs 12vDC rather than 110/220v (pointer welcome)
3) noisy, stinky, and frequently stolen during blackouts -- all problems I hear frequently mentioned
4) overkill. We're not planning to keep a freezer operating, just a few small 12v computer and radio devices and lights.
5) generators connected to home wiring are a risk backfeeding electricity that can reach PG&E crews working on restoring utillity power -- they have to be shut off during power restoration work

If I decide to buy that much backup power I'll go with one of the ten battery systems competing with Tesla's powerwall: http://www.businessinsider.com/recharge ... la-2017-5/

Thanks daniel4g. I thought they had a new model.

I asked Powertec (the company that makes that backup power supply).

They have a higher-end model, the "Micro Vision Li36" -- Sonic, can you make the better one and the addon stackable batteries an option?

Will the backup power be sold, or rented separately, or bundled with the other hardware we'll be renting?

Here's Powertec's reply:
At the current time, we sell through distribution channel partners such as Graybar, Power&Tel, KGP Logistics and Core Telecom. And typically, those sales are driven through providers such as your ISP Sonic.Net. We will be adding an ecommerce site sometime during the year – next year.

The NXG Vision Micro Line is a very dependable product providing 8-12 hours of backup. That product is not expandable.

Our Micro Vision Li36 https://www.powertecsolutions.net/solut ... ups-series is expandable to 24 hours and beyond. Many of our telco and ISP customers are providing this product as a pass through sale to residential and business customers such as yourself. So, you might inquire to see if this is an option that they will be offering.

I don't see us expanding our options, as lots of choices are available in retail channels. The product we offer supplies 8+ hours of backup.

This is the battery:

This is the UPS itself:

The response you quoted mentions GraybaR, which has retail stores:
