Hiya. I'll say upfront I have no idea what I'm doing. My ex set up the computer and I can't ask him, so ...

My D-Link DSL-2540B modem didn't offer Wi-Fi, so I chose a modem that did from Sonic's list of modems that work with them (https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Modem_Reference). I even emailed tech support to confirm and heard back that the one I chose, Zoom X6 ADSL 2/2 Modem w/ Wireless 5590, should work fine. It's ancient; the manual expects Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME, or 98. (I'm Win 8.1) It couldn't self-configure, so I tried manual but got stalled when it came to the ADSL parameters. Tech support did their best but didn't know which settings to suggest.

My choices under ENCAPSULATION (other than PPPoA, which tech support says Sonic doesn't use), are:
1483 Routed IP VC-Mux
1483 Routed IP LLC
1483 Bridged IP VC-Mux
1483 Bridged IP LLC
Classical IP over ATM

Tech support had me try: Classical IP over ATM with: VPI: 0; VCI: 35. But that didn't work. He then recommended this forum. I know there's this page—http://www.sonic.net/support/ss/zoom/ZoomX6—but I don't see how that's going to help me.

So I have two questions: Given that I don't want to rent from sonic, since that's an expensive route,
1. Does anyone know the ADSL parameter settings I can use to set up this Zoom X6 5590 modem?
2. If not, should I just buy a Pace 4111N like noted here? https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Pace_4111N. Or some other modem with Wi-Fi? I'd be happy to buy a modem from sonic, but I just don't like the idea of the escalating cost of renting from sonic.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello,

Try selecting 1483 Bridged IP LLC under ENCAPSULATION rather than Classical IP over ATM, that should get you up and running. Regarding purchasing a 4111n - off the shelf units won't actually work with Sonic services, we have custom firmware on the 4111n's we rent to folks.
