From AT&T DSL to 1-line Fusion -- any phone box wiring?

I currently have AT&T phone/DSL service in San Francisco. I live in a 12-unit apartment building.

I'm considering switching to single-line Fusion.

Does any wiring have to be done by AT&T or Sonic at the phone utility box in my building?

In your case, there shouldn't be any need to modify the buildings wiring. Service will be switched entirely at the Central Office.

Only your modem will need to be reconfigured to turn off PPPoE.

So what will be the specific steps that occur?

I sign up for Fusion online and get an email with my new configuration info and a date that the switch will occur. My DSL goes out that day, I wait an hour and enter my new config info and it comes back on. My old phone number still works. I don't have deal with AT&T at all they just send me a final bill.

Or... my mileage may vary :|

Switching phone companies on a working phone line was the initial intent of the competitive Telecom Act, so it is generally a pretty tidy process. The other end of your wiring, in the central office, is simply moved from your current carrier over to your new one. The local number port databases are updated at the same time. The result is generally a 10-20 minute interruption of dialtone and if applicable DSL service, while the wiring is being moved.
