We got a notice of Paxio's initial fiber build out in West Berkeley (Dwight to University along 6th st). The notice suggested it was facilitated by the City, and there was some sort of open access for ISPs to the fiber. This is more info than we had before, and gives credence to LMI's plan to jump in (and perhaps stop reselling Sonic's service so much?)

Is Sonic considering using the Paxio fiber in Berkeley instead of building their own?

Just got a similar notice from Paxio for Carlton and Ninth. The notice says ‘this new network will provide gigabit for all and provide you a choice of multiple service providers.’

It seems likely to me that this is the same network that Sonic will be using. The installation dates (10/30-11/23) are also in line with Sonic’s estimated service timeframe of December (which has since been removed from the website). I also have a hard time believing that there will be two fiber networks installed in the same area in such a short period of time.

There isn't any connection or relationship between the Paxio and Sonic networks, we just coincidentally have overlapping network coverage in some locations.

It is rare but not totally unheard of to have this much competitive choice, for example, there are premises in San Francisco that have access to physical networks operated by Sonic, AT&T, Comcast, and Wave. And some locations have fiber to the home options from more than one carrier too, we are seeing this in more communities around the Bay Area as AT&T appears to be working to catch up to our fiber deployments. ;)
