I want to check this - is there any chance I can get a static IP with my new fiber service? I'm not running a server out of my house, but I do have a strict access control thing on one of the servers I administer (I don't run fail2ban on anybody originating from my IP addr or my coworkers).

If a static IP isn't available, is there a fixed ip range we're going to always be in? I can just do that if it's a /16 or something.

No, static IP isn't available on Fusion Fiber. And yes, you'll find you'll generally be in the same large subnet, but that's always subject to change, so YMMV!

Any reason no static IPs on fiber? Will that change in the future? Also, I'm on ADSL2+ fusion thinking of moving to VDSL2. Are static IPs still available after that switch?

Product and network complexity with static IPs, as well as significantly declining need. These days with cloud services and dynamic DNS, a static IP may be nice to have, but it seldom required for an application. And we have limited software development and network engineering resources, and building more network and other higher priority tools stands out for us.

Yes, static IP servces are available on VDSL2 connections, same as with ADSL2+. You would, however, be provisioned to a different static IP block as a result of the switch.

Lack of static IP is the single reason I haven't signed up for fiber in Sunset yet :/

You're going to be in the minority. DDNS will serve 90+% of people who need static. If I had to choose between Sonic using engineering resources to offer static IPs for their customers or building out their fiber network, guess what I would choose? I don't live in S.F.

If you're one of those people who needs static because of a "complicated" network, you should be able to work around it.

For those who are unaware of what DDNS is, it's actually a really cool tool for situations like this.
DDNS, or Dynamic DNS, essentially associates your dynamic IP address with a hostname. Your computer (or sometimes your router) will frequently reach out to the DDNS provider, and update it with your current IP address. Even though your IP might change, your DDNS hostname will be persistent, acting in a similar manner to a static IP address.

True, but this is not true of the Reverse DNS lookup. That will fail with DDNS.

C'mon you can run the VMs at AWS for next to nothing, and more importantly NOT limited to 100M outbound (vm to the Internet) as Sonic's GPON is at the moment if you were to run your servers at the house. Static IP is provided for free with each EC2 instance...
