Hello Shelle

Few things to start your basic troubleshooting :

1) how many devices are connected to your network ? can you connect like this : Wall outlet > modem / router > computer and see if the speeds do not improve

2) What motherboard , microprocessor , how much ram do you have ? ( or how old is your computer )

3) Can you go to control panel > system and take screenshot of that window

4) Can you go to control panel > Network and Sharing center > change adapter settings > right click on the active adapter > properties > configure > advanced > scroll down to speed and duplex and if the value is set to auto negotiate set it to 1 Gbps full duplex and test the speeds .

5) do you use cat 5 ( or better ) to connect router/modem to computer ?

Also from your screenshot I see you are using wifi connection , can you try a hardwire connection and post the results .

Just to confirm the service that you receive from sonic is the gigabit fiber connection correct ?

Does anybody know of what MODEMS (not routers), or types of modems, are compatible with Fiber, besides obviously the Pace rental?

Hello gdope. A modem isn't necessary on Fiber. The ONT (optical network terminal) functions essentially as a modem would and is provided by Sonic (at no additional cost to you) and installed during the Fiber installation.

What kind of setup are you thinking of configuring?

Ahhh, that makes sense! I'd like to avoid the monthly RG rental and am just trying to find a list of compatible routers. I originally thought it was a compatible modem that I needed, but thanks for clarifying! I currently have an AirPort Time Capsule that I would like to keep using, but I guess it isn't compatible with the ONT (tried plugging it in directly but it doesn't seem to work).

As far as I'm aware your Airport Time Capsule should work. Fire up Airport Utility and double check that Routing is enabled and it's configured for DHCP (as opposed to PPPoE). Another thing you may want to look into is if the Time Capsule is Gigabit capable. The current model Time Capsule is Gigabit ready, I don't know if earlier models are though.

You're right, it does work! I actually didn't have to change any settings, but restarting the time capsule did it :) My speed tests are actually showing my time capsule as having higher speeds than Sonic's provided Pace, so that's awesome!

Thanks for the help!

I'm looking to replace the rental we have from Sonic. What should I be looking for to be compliant with Sonic? I'm looking for specific recommendations for a Fiber Optic modem or a feature set that I'll need, so I can research.

For wireless I am going to with Plume or Erro and set up a wireless mesh. I won't need it to be wireless.

Replacing the “modem” (the equivalent device in a fiber LAN is what is known as an Optical Network Terminal – read more about the device here: https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Adtran_411) isn't necessary as they are provided free of charge. Routers, on the other hand you are free to provide yourself, and are generally universally compatible across service types and modems (i.e. a router will work with just about any modem, whether it is fiber, cable, or DSL, so long as there aren't any erroneous settings in the modem which are blocking the router). As far as specific recommendations we suggest picking up something which is both Gigabit compatible and which provides wireless AC so that you can make the most of your speeds. If you would like help in assuring that a 3rd party device will work in conjunction with your service feel free to send me a message with the make/model and I'd be glad to look into it.
