Need advice on a new router

I need to buy a new router for my home network and I'm in search of advice - I have a dynamic IP address which caused my now dead ASUS WL-500W router to sometimes (why not all the time, don't know) to drop transfers when the IP lease was renewed.

My needs are pretty simple, modem->router->wired computers and to a wireless access point. Good wireless characteristics would be nice but not essential as I have wired unit providing wireless where I primarily use wireless.
I don't play online games but do do some(legit) P2P stuff (from an attached PC, not a server like the WL-500 has in the router itself). Cost can't be ignored but I'd put reliability first.

Many of the reviews I read on places like Newegg seem suspect (shrills for the product - or its competitors?) but a lot say that many Cisco/Lynksys routers have heat issues.

I dropped an email to sonic support and was told that any ADSL+ router would be fine (even though I'm not looking to replace my modem...) so that wasn't much help. I'd be prepared to get a modem/router combo if I could be convinced that was a good idea.

Suggestions on what to get - or to avoid - welcome.

Thanks, Richard

I'm currently using a Linksys WRT54G2, and I haven't noticed any problems with it.

It's not as easy to configure for wifi security as I would like, but I've managed to get it done.

I also have a Netgear WGR614 on a shelf. It's not currently in use, but it came in handy during a period where we had two residences with broadband. It also seemed to work fine, and I never noticed any problems with it.

Reliability was a big issue for me, too, as when I travel, my spouse is stuck home alone and is clueless about how to do anything with the networking equipment. Fortunately, neither one has been a issue once configured.

I would suggest the ZTE modem/router combined unit that we offer. It's supported by our team, whereas with a Linksys or other device, you will need to seek support from the manufacturer for any issues beyond "plug it in and it works".
