I signed up for Sonic.Net DSL a few days ago. I currently have AT&T DSL. I understand that Sonic will e-mail me when they have an install date for their DSL. Yesterday my AT&T DSL stopped working - I went through basic debugging procedures to discover that AT&T DSL service seems to be terminated.
Is this normal for there to be a day or more of not having any DSL service?

No, that is not normal, especially if you haven't even received an installation date from Sonic.
Give the Sonic folks a call and see if they can track it back.
