Hi all-

In comparing DSLX's TrueStream service to Sonic's FTTN, I noticed that DSLExtreme is willing to sell a block of 5 static IPs whereas sonic is not.

Is there a reason for that?

Thanks?

Yes. We have plans to add a single static IP to the service in future at no cost. This is typically included in our Fusion service, but not yet launched in Fusion FTTN.

If you are comparing Sonic to other options, look closely at second-year pricing.

Got it. Thanks Dane! Will those be sonic-owned IPs via VPN or AT&T static IPs?

Sonic IPs via encrypted VPN tunnel. You could terminate them using client software on the workstation, or using a hardware device for whole-LAN.

We haven't yet deployed the new VPN concentration equipment that is necessary for this, so it's not coming soon, but this is the road map.

Got it. I assume truestream is using AT&T static IPs (and charging for them) instead of going the vpn route.

Is that an option for sonic customers?

No, we do not plan to offer statics for a fee, only free, using our own addresses.

When statics is available, what hardware is needed to take the statics via VPN and is it possible to get more than one static IP as with the current legacy sonic.net DSL, one can get 8 static IPs which costs more than the dynamic IP service.

I like the option of a static IP, but won't we get a performance hit using a VPN?

Yes, but these connections are generally fast enough that this isn't a significant factor.

Static IP pricing for more than one static is TBD at this point. I'd guess we'd just mirror what we do today with Fusion, where a single static IP for residential customers is free, and four are available for $10 monthly, eight for $20.

As for hardware, we haven't yet evaluated the various hardware VPN client devices in the marketplace. I searched Amazon and found a few, but have no direct experience with any of them. I'd guess that most customers who take a single static for a server will just run VPN on that server directly, but people's needs vary.
