It looks like they just approved a new standard to deliver much better speeds than DSL over phone lines! Is this something Sonic might use?

High speed over twisted copper pairs, according to the article, is limited to 250 meters (820 feet) from the "node". Something like this would apply to AT&T's U-Verse system, and even then, 820 feet would only encompass a few homes around the node.

Even if Sonic were to implement this technology, it would only work for those customers within 820 wire feet of the CO. Since CO's are fairly large buildings, this would encompass even fewer customers that would have to be within that short range of the CO. Sonic has chosen not to deploy FTTN/copper plant, but rather deploy FTTH instead. This would cover many more customers within their footprint.

As wa2ibm notes, this is a very short-range standard. Just as VDSL2 offers higher speed at shorter distances than ADSL2+, a variety of standards promise speeds up up to a Gigabit or more on copper - but generally at hundreds of meters.

We are testing VDSL2 here, and anticipate doing some deployments of this technology on a trial basis in some COs in the future. The benefits are limited due to distance, but for those lucky enough to be close, it could delivery some exciting speeds.
