ETA for Alameda fiber service?

I'm super excited to get Sonic fiber in Alameda. I pre-ordered about a month ago and have been checking the status page regularly. It still shows "Pre-Construction". Any estimate for when construction will start and service will be available?

Thanks,

We can’t provide a useful estimate when we are still awaiting completion of engineering and permits. You’ll see a date appear when we get permits all in hand and we’re able to schedule construction.

Hi,

After the point when sonic has its own infrastructure built in Alameda, if I switch to it, would it allow connections to (for example) ports 22, 80, 443, (and others), and ports above 1023? Or will these ports be closed/blocked?

Thanks,

Jim

(meaning of course TCP ports)

We restrict access to ports that are known vectors of abuse (like port 25) and some ports we need to allocate for maintaining and managing our network.

Understandable, your customers are worth protecting :) That said, will there be the possibility of incoming connections on some ports?

Hi Jim,

What Spencer is saying is that except for the very few ports he mentioned, everything else is not blocked by Sonic. You can add forwarding to those ports in the router as you please.

Just wondering if there’s any update on how close those permits are to being in hand for Alameda 94501. Specifically down my street.

What’s a typical length of time once the status goes to construction and actual installation? My 1Gbit ATT works great but I can’t wait ditch them for Sonic. Thanks!

The timeline can vary due to the nature of waiting for permit approval among other delays, so we can't give anything specific or necessarily accurate at the moment. However, on average this stage (pre-construction) can last anywhere between 6 months to 1+ years. Then we move onto the construction phase which also takes a while to complete and is subject to delays throughout the project.

Kind regards,
