10g network is a punishment for existing, loyal clients

I always chuckle when I see people vent about lack of 10G availability. As a former 50/5 FTTN customer who was forced to move to Comcast, I would love to have access to 1G fiber at my house instead of paying $76/mo for 400/6. Is what it is though.

And yeah, lack of 10G consumer hardware is bit of a thing. I provide assistance for a 10G Sonic customer and its more cost effective to stick with 1G hardware… ~8 users (local + VPN) and rarely do I see the pipe filled over 75%. All depends on the use case of course.

Best part of Sonic’s 10G service isn’t the speed imo, it’s the low cost of $30/mo! Now that I can get behind 8-)

After looking at the issues and money, I decided to first try 10G between two machines with ~3' cat6a.

Upstream services also often can’t provide speeds anywhere near 10 Gbit. I can’t remember if it was Box or Dropbox but I’ve seen transfers capped well below 1 Gbit before. Compressed data streams like 4K Netflix only needs around 25 Mbit.

10G hardware is definitely hard to come by affordably. I’ve got an RMA in for a switch (business class! ha) that died suddenly after 8 months while idle.

The back end workflow and process has been developed and tested and it's just a matter of clarifying some remaining policy questions and rolling out updates to the front end. But please note while all new network has been XGSPON capable for some time, earlier network deployments are not. Users on GPON network will be able to place a pre-order, if you will, for an upgrade to 10G at a later date. Upgrading the older infrastructure to support 10G services is a big project.
When is this "relatively soon" happening? And how do I know if I'm on the XGSPON network or not?

In place upgrades to 10g for customers who were deployed as 1g on XGSPON segments can upgrade in the membertools now. Before anyone gets their hopes up, this is a relatively small cohort of users the majority of which I think are in Oakland that were turned up 1g during the field trial and migration to 10g service delivery.

as an add to this tool, would be great to get some sort of estimate when other customers (i am in berkeley) will have a path to upgrade to 10g. or, a way to pay additional for it (i am happy to pay...).

So if one's 1g account were closed and ONT mysteriously vanished, would a new account be 10g?

It's insane that existing customers just can't have 10g.

Hello! Service availability is tied to location rather than the equipment itself. That being said, we are working as fast as we can to make a 10g upgrade available for 1g customers.
