Funny story. I'm not a real gamer, but I play a casual racing video game with some friends every week (Wreckfest). Most of them are in SoCal with one or two further east.
One guy used to host the server at an Azure datacenter, and everyone was alway shocked that my (Sonic-resold) AT&T gig fiber was giving me something like 2ms to the server. They always joked about me being camped out in the datacenter. Nobody else could break into the single digits, even on fiber. Depending on what internet resource you ask, Azure either has their west DC here in the Bay Area, or in Fresno. Either way, my latency seemed shockingly low to all of us.
Anyway, my buddy who hosted the server on Azure recently moved it into his garage in San Diego. Predictable, he's now the one getting 2ms ping times, but I'm still hovering in the 14-15ms range, which is blowing away everyone in SoCal. Local San Diego folks are having >20ms pings as is one guy in Los Angeles who is also on fiber. Funny that I'm the fastest one other than the guy in the same physical building.
Just a silly but fun data point.
I suspect one reason is that we're both AT&T customers. Will be funny to see if it gets worse when I move to Sonic 10gig some day soon
