AXE11000 WiFi Mesh System (RBKE963)

NETGEAR® Orbi™ Quad-band WiFi 6E Mesh System, 10.8Gbps

https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/mesh/rbke963/

Has anyone tried this router? I like that it has a 10GB WAN port to produce wifi 6 speeds, and has a 2.5GB port as well as a few 1GB ports for wired connections.

This new Orbi is certainly a capable system, and it should deliver really good WiFi performance. I’d expect to see a bit over a gigabit with a device like this and the right client. WiFi though won’t deliver even a fraction of the 10Gbps Sonic connection speed though, on this or any other router.

The weakness is the wired options, and because that’s the only way to actually get full soeed, that’s an issue. It’s got a single 2.5Gbps port plus some 1Gbps ports, so you won’t ever see the full capabilities of your 10Gbps connection.

Ideally you’d want something with 10Gbps Ethernet in and out, so that you can connect to a 10G switch and to Ethernet to any fixed locations you want the full speed in the home - desks, gaming systems, etc.

The only consumer 10G+10G router I’m aware of is the Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro, which you’d paid with their 10G switch and then wired access points, which typically ingest 2.5Gbps each today.

If anyone has built up a good 10Gbps home setup, please do share your experiences here.

I just learned about the following 10Gb switch and wondered if anyone has experience with it:

Thanks!

That’d be fine for a 10G switch, but you also need a router to go in front of it. The same vendor’s Dream Machine Pro is the only reasonably priced one that I know of. And it only gives a single 10G port, so you’d need the switch too.

https://store.ui.com/products/udm-pro

The the config would be:

Sonic Fiber Optical Network Terminal
|
Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro
| \\\\\\\\
| Up to eight 1G connected devices
|
Ubiquity 10G switch
/ | \
Up to three 10G connected devices

If you need more than three 10G-capable (or 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps), you could chain another 10G switch, which would gain you two additional usable 10G ports for each switch you chain.

What I’m not finding in the Ubiquity product line is any WiFi access points that uplink at >1Gbps. I know that Orbi and Netgear (which are fully integrated routers and access points in one) do, but those devices don’t output 10Gbps on the wired side.

The Ubiquity setup above does, but what access points to pair it with?

I've seen that switch but its too bad the input is limited to 1g... They should have made that an SFP+ port so it could be used as a 10g uplink instead of having to use one of the 4 10g ports. May not matter for some of course.

Ubiquiti also has an early access store. Kind of intersting to see/test some of their new beta products though not all seem to make it to mass production.

@dfredwood: there was a similar thread here regarding 10g equipment. One option for an all in one might be this that's mesh compatible and has 2 10g ports (GbE & SFP+). Its not 6E but would allow to you downlink a 10g switch... The UDM Pro is another option as mentioned quite often but you would need to add AP(s) for wifi making the Asus router a more cost effective option perhaps.

@js9erfan, that ASUS router doesn’t seem to have the 10G on the WAN side. From one of the Q&As on Amazon, someone writes, “The dedicated wan port is only 1gb. The dual 10gb are intended for lan connections.”

So, still striking out on finding a single device with 10G WAN and LAN. Anybody else find one?

Hmm, according to Asus' page it shows it being 10g WAN compatible: https://www.asus.com/us/Networking-IoT- ... /RT-AX89X/

Without diving into the manual I assume the 10g interfaces are configurable (WAN or LAN).

In the UniFi stack the cheapest option would be this:

https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi- ... ggregation

You'd also need SFP modules(or DACs for short distances) from this page:

https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi- ... es-modules

https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi- ... -accessory . For 10G copper/ethernet you'd want UACC-CM-RJ45-10G which you can see if you pick the 10G/30m combination

The switch by itself sure... But once you add the SFP+ transceivers for your PCs, NAS, etc. (lets say 7 with a DAC to the router) you're looking at an additional ~$470 not including the AP(s) 8-)
