“It’s a WiFiBlast. It reconnects the split channels from your router and blasts it across the house. ....
I know I don't need it (got an Eero setup that's fine)
But how do I explain it to people elsewhere who wonder?

Hello, I am not familiar with "wifiblast" it sounds like it would be a wifi repeater or mesh network solution of some type. But if you or others need something like that, Sonic has the eero equipment that people can rent. Have a good day!

Yup, it’s just a cheapo wifi extender. It’s the late night “as seen on TV” version of networking equipment. Won’t likely have mesh capabilities like handoff between access points for devices as they move around the home. You can also expect it to be a 1x1 radio setup, slower than the typical 2x2 (dual stream) gear that’s commodity today. Better to use a proven mesh solution such as Sonic’s whole-home WiFi.

Bingo, looks like it might be a version of this unit, available for $6-$7 on Alibaba:
