10Gbps Sonic line with 10gbe switch in between ONT Modem and Eero Pro 6 router?

Hey there,

Love sonic had it while living in SF and just got a surprise drop of a 10gbps (yes 10 gigabit!) residential line in East Oakland just installed.

Looks like sonic is future proofing their lines which is awesome, but now I'm trying to take advantage of these speeds beyond a 1 Gig which eero is limited to both on wifi 6 (obviously) and ethernet wired ports. If I invest in a 10gbe switch can I plug my modem 10g line into it and then run the eero off of one of the ports so that I can get hard wired access to 10gbe without losing out on wireless?

It seems like the service sonic is offering is outpacing the tech (and prices for it) so I know im not the norm at the moment.

My goal is to have a hard wired 10Gbps access on my laptop and NAS but also run my eero pro 6 setup for wifi for the rest of my devices. Not many routers have 10gbe built in at the moment and barely 2.5g wan port. so the only solution I can think of is a switch, but wondering if thats an issue to run a switch in between a modem and wireless router.

thinking of this setup or something similar since 10gbe switches are cost prohibitive for the avg consumer

thanks!

You DON'T put a switch between a modem/ONT and a router.

that was my initial thought, so how would I go about getting 10Gbe ports without ditching my eero pro 6 setup?

10GB capable router (probably ain't cheap), if this service actually allows you use your own hardware.

You'll be looking at building your own pfsense/opensense etc router with 10gb Rj45 NICs on an x86 platform or purchasing a very expensive business / enterprise router (new / used) for several hundred $'s.

Routing at 10gb aint cheap even for businesses.

Switching at 10 gbps is a bit more affordable given smaller 10 gbps switches like a what Mikrotik has to offer (https://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-CRS305- ... B07LFKGP1L) or (https://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-12-Port ... B07VS1XJZ6) for example but still a significant investment.

thank you, this was sort of what I was looking for. Annoying that I have to find/build some sort of 10gbe specific router and not build off some existing solution, but make sense. Seems like 10gbe is too far ahead at the moment to make it accessible to the consumer. The QNAP QHora-301w https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/qhora-301w seems like the only reasonable solution at the moment with 2 x 10gbe ports and 4 x 1 1gbe ports + wifi 6 built in at around $330... might just wait to see when new tech and prices come down.

Hopefully once Wifi 6E becomes mainstream we'll get 10gbe ports standard in routers.

All depends on preference but currently have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro which features a 1/10G SFP+ WAN Port and 1/10G SFP+ LAN Port. Of course, when I bought the thing, I didn't even realize that it might eventually actually come in handy. Currently just using the standard 10/100/1000 RJ45 WAN Port. That's just the beginning though unfortunately. I would need to upgrade our switches and our hardwired equipment is not capable either. Not to mention we are still running Cat5e around the house so not sure how well that would work out. At least it's a start though.
