When I got sonic fiber about four years or so ago it came with a SmartRG WiFi router. It seems like eero is the router that is currently provided for new subscribers. Is there anything better or worse about the eero compared to the SmartRG? If the eero has any benefit is there a way for me to swap out the SmartRG?

Any info/ideas/opinions are appreciated!

Depending on model, a SmartRG router has more ports than the eero router, hence more flexibility. (The eero has two gigabit Ethernet ports, used to connect to the Internet and to your computer, so there are none free for attached storage, a network printer, or a secondary router.) The other salient comparison is the wi-fi standard it supports: the eero supports 802.11ac, which is generally stronger than 802.11b/g/n.

And perhaps it matters to you that the eero company is now part of Amazon.

The key feature of Eero is mesh: you can have two, three, or ten units - whatever is required to provide the coverage you want. House, yard, garage, guess house - anything is possible by just adding more units.

Mesh has become a thing because the faster 5ghz frequencies do not penetrate walls etc as well as the lower frequency and lower speed 2.4ghz. So to get hundreds of megabits you need 5ghz, and then to achieve equivalent coverage that a single 2.4ghz unit required, you might need two or three 5ghz devices. This is why mesh home WiFi has become so popular.

You can use the Member Tools page to add eero units whenever you’d like to give it a try. You can learn more at Sonic.com/betterwifi

Thanks for all this info! We have the SmartRG in the garage that goes into a switch that then feeds every room in the house via wired Ethernet. We run a UniFi access point using poe at the “back” of the house. Our WiFi through the house seems super strong and fast everywhere- so it sounds like we don’t need to make any changes now.. [:Y:]
