How often do you power cycle your Fiber ONT for Fusion?

Fiber was out all morning, resolved with a reboot of the router. This is what Sonic support said:

From a remote stand point, the ONT looks in great condition and that this was a simple need for re-sync. Unfortunately, this something common with almost all modems, with all internet connections types, needing to power cycle is all apart of good maintenance. The only way I see around this would possibly be performing power cycles on your own terms a little more frequently to ensure the modem is tip top shape.


Is rebooting your ONT part of your regular maintenance of your fiber connection? How does power cycling an ONT help keep it in "tip top shape"?

No, I wouldn’t accept this either. While we can have issues that leave equipment in a “stuck” state, those should always relate to a know maintenance or outage issue. It should NOT be necessary for customers to routinely engage in any sort of maintenance of the equipment. (If we thought a periodic reboot was necessary, we could trigger that remotely!)

So, if a device requires rebooting on a regular basis to re-establish connection or resolve something, that needs repair. Please don’t accept repeated reboot as a “fix”.

ONT, no. My own Ubiquiti router, maybe once every 3-4 months.

Rebooting WiFi routers will typically help your WiFi connection because this places your WiFi network on a new radio channel that will typically perform better than the channel you were on before. In areas where Radio interference is not as bad, you will only need to reboot your WiFi router once or twice a year. Due to the Pandemic and now everyone working from home, there are considerably more WiFi networks around than there ever has been before historically. Now that there are more WiFi networks around, your radio channel can be congested more often than just once or twice a year. The best way to combat this interference is to improve your WiFi router to a more powerful one. We have such a router available called the eero.
