Anything I can check to resolve this?
Unable to connect

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.google.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
My wife's Windows box using Chrome isn't having this problem, so it's likely something my Mac or Firefox is doing.
Or not doing. Both computers connect with Ethernet to the Sonic router, fiber.

Mac users usually claim their mac **just work** and make fun of windows users...

I would check the ip/dns settings.
Maybe it was set to use a specific IP in a different subnet or use a dns server that is not available.
Last week i was setting up some access points and that required me connecting them directly with an ethernet cable and setting my computer ipv4 to be 192.168.1.2 (mask 255.255.255.0) so it would find 192.168.1.1 which is the default ip of the access point. Once i was done, before I reset the ip setting to "get an ip automatically" it would not find any website.
Can you ping individual ip successfully?
You can set the dns to 8.8.8.8 (google public dns server) to test if it helps.

I"m not an Apple religionist. Yeah, if I spent a couple thousand dollars I'd get a nice new computer that would just work, for a while. Trust me. Apple products self-degrade into landfill within a decade, and my 2010 Mac is likely on the edge. I still have DOS boxes that work, and somewhere a CP/M install of WordStar on 8" floppy disk. I'm a dinosaur.

DNS is set to 192.168.42.1 and "Home" on both wifi and Ethernet, with Sonic's glass fiber connection and rent-a-router.

Hm, I find if I go into Firefox preferences and turn off the cookie blocking and tracker blocking, Google's search page comes right up. That would be clever of Google.

Make sure you have the largest Firefox. Have you tried with Chrome and safari?

Latest firefox 80.0 64 bit, check. Refreshed the app with a new download just in case.

Turning off all of Firefox's cookie and tracking protection seems to make Google pop right up. Imagine that.

Just tried adding Google's DNS 0.0.0.0 to the Preferences, in addition to Sonic's default. Time will tell.

Google dns is 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4
0.0.0.0 is not a valid address.

Google's business is to serve you ads, so it may be that if it can't track you the rest of the service degrades.

Ping looks a little poorly. Could this explain "can't establish a connection"?
I had already fixed 8.8.8.8.

Some time ago DoH was enabled by default In Firefox. If enabled try disabling it and see if the issue persists. As another test you can instead try accessing google.com by IP (172.217.0.46) or change the DoH provider.

Due to outbound web filtering on my LAN I force all local DNS traffic over ports 53/853 to use my gateway (pfSense) so when FF implemented this it resulted in a lot of connection errors… However, you can easily disable DoH in FF if desired.

Maybe it's a problem with your internet connection.
If it is resolving but you can't reach it try running [traceroute] example.com and see where they start timing out.
Here's mine:
