I have Windows XP with firewall enabled. Is there a solid reason why I shouldn't disable the (additional) firewall on my modem if it makes my Fusion connection more stable and reduces or eliminates dropouts?

The firewall setting should have no bearing on stability or "dropouts". If your circuit is unstable, do ring support on 611, they can get that fixed for you!
